Semaglutide is a glucagon-lIke peptide-1 (GLP-1) medication that is made at compounding pharmacies. Semaglutide is an antidiabetic medication used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and an anti-obesity medication used for long-term weight management.
It mimics the GLP-1 hormone that is released in the gastrointestinal tract in response to eating. One role of GLP-1 is to prompt the body to produce more insulin, which reduces blood glucose (sugar). The medication slows the gastrointestinal tract and also lowers blood glucose and mimics the bodies response to eating. People that take this medication experience less food cravings and a feeling of fullness that decreases appetite.
It is administered by injection into areas like the stomach, thigh, or back of arm in the subcutaneous tissue. These injections can be done at home, with the medication shipped directly to your home. Injections can also be done in the clinic by appointment.
If administered at home, medication and injection supplies are sent directly to you home. Medication is kept in the refrigerator and injections are delivered as directed by the provider once a week.
Patients are expected to eat a diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Exercise should be done 3 times a week to see optimal results.
To avoid side effects of stomach cramping or other GI upset, it is recommended that the injection is preformed with in 30-45 min of eating a full meal.
Patients can experience diarrhea, stomach cramps, constipation, vomiting, changes to face, low blood sugar, vivid dreams, fatigue, and rebound weight gain. Other more rare side effects are gallbladder disease, kidney damage and pancreatitis.
Patients that have a history of diabetes or are taking Insulin should not take Semaglutide because it could lower the blood glucose level.
Patients with a personal or family history of medullar thyroid carcinoma should not take Semaglutide.
